The old cliché, health is wealth, has never been more in need than these modern times we live in. With food production operating at its peak, the entire world has access to all sorts of food products and getting fit is a first priority of many. We have seen an explosive growth in processed food consumptions and we have also seen their adverse effects. With changing lifestyles geared more towards self indulgent eating, problems like obesity have come to the forefront.

As a consequence, the awareness that the solution lies not in expensive medical treatments but in maintaining a well balanced diet and healthy lifestyle has taken hold. “What is a balanced diet?” is a question most often asked. In short a well balanced diet provides the correct number of calories and the correct mix of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and vegetables that the body needs to keep healthy. Getting fit is not an impossible task if the diet is well balanced. Being healthy is a choice. A lifestyle choice that can be made anytime, and improved everyday.

Proteins

Muscles need proteins to develop and grow. If you are into muscle and fitness, you need more proteins since your exercise levels are much higher than the norm. The body does not produce many proteins naturally and therefore the diet has to compensate for these proteins. Chicken, tuna, cottage cheese, and eggs are great sources of lean meat and are very good for building muscle and fitness. Carbohydrates

Carbs are a ready energy source and should be eaten in healthy portions for optimal health and fitness. Whole wheat bread, cereals and rice are recommended sources if you are heavily into running or similar sports. Carbs are a double-edged sword. They are a ready source of energy but if not used, they are converted to fat. Getting fit probably means that you will have to lower your intake of carbs.

Fats

Your body needs fat which help proper functioning of the brain. Fried foods contain bad fat that constrict the arteries causing strokes and heart attacks. Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats are used by the brain. The body does not produce these fatty acids and your diet must include these. All fish, nuts, oils and nut butters are rich in these fats. Nuts, oils, beans, lentils are also very good sources for protein in you are planning to keep your muscle and fitness levels up to par.

Vegetables

Vegetables play a dominant role in keeping the body free from free radicals. If these are not flushed out, these free radicals will mutate your DNA and cause cancer. Vegetables are also excellent sources of minerals like iron, potassium, zinc, magnesium and other minerals. The body uses them to regulate the general function of the body in optimum conditions. For muscle and fitness, vegetables play a very crucial role. Getting fit will require a healthy dose of vegetables in your daily diet.

To sum it up, if you follow the new pyramid released by the officials you will not have to worry about getting fit and gaining a healthy lifestyle. I’m not telling you anything new here, I’m simply reminding you of the importance of your diet on your overall health and well being. Start by making small and simple changes to improve your diet everyday, and before you know it you will have developed a complete shift in your diet and will be well on your well to a long, healthy life. Remember, your food is your fuel.
