If you live in San Diego, you probably already know what this great city has to offer. You can enjoy some year-round attractions, fabulous weather, and some amazing restaurants, bars, and music venues. If you are mulling over moving to this area, you might wonder what neighborhoods will work best for you and your family.
We’ll talk about three of the better San Diego suburbs right now. Any of these options might work well for you, but some have unique attractions about which you should know.
Carlsbad
If you look at the suburbs of San Diego, you might find it hard to beat Carlsbad. It’s north of San Diego and south of Los Angeles. You can get to San Diego from there in about half an hour, and it’s just an hour and a half from LA, traffic permitting.
You may notice all kinds of corporate headquarters there, including ViaSat, Atticus Clothing, and Jenny Craig. If you want to work for any of them, you’ll find the commute easy and smooth.
In one section, you’ll find mansions, eucalyptus groves, and a lagoon. You can visit the venerable town library and climb up the extinct volcano Mount Calavera if you’re feeling daring.
You can also enroll your teenagers in the prestigious Sage Creek High School. Most of those who attend go on to the country’s better colleges.
You might also like Carlsbad if you’re a golf junkie. You’ll find some of the area’s best courses there, including the celebrated La Costa Resort and Spa course that’s gorgeous but challenging.
Del Mar
You should also look at Del Mar if you’re thinking about a San Diego suburb. It’s an affluent community with homes on bluffs that overlook the ocean. You can buy a house there and look out at the sea each morning over your coffee.
This neighborhood’s population doesn’t typically swell over 4,500 or so. Many celebrities call it home, including athletes and business titans.
You can attend the San Diego County Fair every year if you live there, or you might prefer the Del Mar Antique Show, which attracts antique lovers from all around the country. You may find some items that you feel will perfectly decorate your home. You can haggle with the vendors and try to get the best deals.
If you like to bet the ponies a little bit, you’ll likely want to spend some time at the Del Mar Racetrack. When you’re ready to sit and enjoy a muffin or something more substantial, you can head into the town’s center and sit at an outdoor table.
You’ll find some prime people watching opportunities, and maybe you’ll stick around long enough to have dinner at the famous Poseidon Restaurant Del Mar, home to authentic ceviche with the freshest ingredients from the nearby ocean.
Solana Beach
Solana Beach is another option if you want easy San Diego access, but you’d prefer to stay away from the inner city. This oceanside community attracts many young professionals in the tech niche.
You can get into downtown San Diego in less than half an hour, and there’s also a convenient bus that will take you to and from the neighborhood. This is another popular golf enclave, with many flocking to the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. There’s a long waiting list to become a member, but maybe you can befriend someone and score a guest pass.
The Original Dog Beach is a favorite hangout for anyone who likes to take their pup for a walk and meet some fellow dog lovers. There’s also a very old residential area called La Colonia de Eden Gardens. It has existed since the 1920s.
You can stroll along the main drag and enjoy bookstores, art galleries, coffee shops, and boutiques. You can also get some of the freshest produce at the Solana Beach Farmer’s Market. You’re helping local farmers, and you can get ingredients for whatever feast you want to cook up at home.
The Solana school district turns out many teenagers who go on to the nation’s better colleges. Some particularly high marks go to the San Dieguito Union High School District.
You might also want to look at Coronado, La Jolla, or Encinitas if none of these first three seem quite right for you. San Diego has many neighborhoods and adjacent communities with some incredible features. If you have the money, you should find something suitable for yourself and your family, whether you’re introverts or extroverts.
