Exceptional Fine Art By Artist Justyna Kopania
Van Gogh. Renoir. Monet. Klimt. overstockArt.com sells thousands of fine art oil reproductions of these masters’ paintings each year. But there’s one artist who outsells them all by a landslide … contemporary artist Justyna Kopania of Warszawa, Poland.
Oil reproductions of her 2007 painting “Moon” is overstockArt.com’s top seller—by far—in both units and dollars. And it’s not even close.
“She’s competing with the masters on a level playing field,” says Amitai Sasson, VP of Marketing and Development at overstockArt.com. “Her paintings aren’t marketed more than the classics or featured more prominently. They’re comparable in price. And they beat the masters, month after month.”
“She does have a following, but people who have never heard of her also buy her paintings,” adds David Sasson, CEO of overstockArt.com. “People who come to our site specifically searching for Van Gogh buy her paintings instead.”
Kopania’s prolific body of work incompasses a wide range of subjects, from stormy seas to street scenes to stage performers. Taking inspiration from her early fascination with music and performance, as well as the moments that have stuck in her memory, her richly textured (“fleshy”) paintings are evocative, poetic, and at times theatrical and extremely emotive. Her works explore the themes of freedom (often represented by the ocean), the fleeting nature of time, and the complex nature of Man.
In order to give viewers thought-provoking new perspectives, she paints every day—sometimes for several hours—using not just brushes but anything she can get her hands on, and often her hands themselves. The artist recently posted a series of videos of her process on her Facebook page.
Kopania is part of overstockArt.com’s Artists Become program, an online community for creating, selling and buying artwork online. Artists Become provides a unique means for contemporary artists to find new clients without relying on high-priced art dealers. Participating artists receive royalties for every canvas reproduction sold.
The top-selling painting, “Moon,” is a beautiful image of a nighttime landscape with only the glow of the moon for light. It’s evocative, remote, perhaps a bit moody…and buyers have noted it gives them a feeling of serenity.
“The truth is, we don’t really know,” says David Sasson. “There are certain elements in paintings that sell better—for example, a painting of a seascape with a lighthouse sells better than one without. A night sky painting with a moon sells better than one without. But we have many other paintings that feature the moon that don’t sell nearly as well. Same with similar color palettes.
“So, there’s a mystery about it—she’s tapped into something unique that speaks to the psyche. That’s what great artists do.”
