Actor and director Tom Hanks is one of the world’s most well-known and recognizable movie performers and is considered an American cultural icon. He is widely popular for both his humorous and thriller parts. See how he rose to become one of Hollywood’s megastars in our Hollywood Spotlight.

Early Start

Hanks first started learning at Oakland’s Skyline High School, where he participated in several school productions, such as South Pacific. He relocated to New York City in 1979 and made his acting debut in the 1980 low-budget slasher movie “He Knows You’re Alone.” After, he got the lead position of the television film Mazes and Monsters.

Early that year, under the direction of Daniel Southern, he played Callimaco in the Riverside Shakespeare Company production of Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Mandrake.” Tom Hanks got the role of Kip Wilson in the ABC series ‘Bosom Buddies’ the following year.

He and Peter Scolari portrayed two men who were coerced into dressing as women to reside in a female motel. Scolari and Hanks had previously collaborated on the game program ‘Make Me Laugh’ in the 1970s. Hanks became a star in the show, and critics praised him, some saying it was a shame he would not be on the TV show for long. In Pinocchio, Tom Hanks delivered the emotional of Geppetto, the ‘father’ of Pinocchio. While the movie was not as successful as the original, his performance got praise from critics.


Recognition and Nominations

Hanks has nominations for numerous awards during his acting and producing careers. He has nominations for six Academy Awards, including two consecutive victories for Best Actor for the films ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Philadelphia’ in 1993 and 1994, respectively. In 2013, Hanks got nominated for a Tony Award in a Play for his work in Nora Ephron’s ‘Lucky Guy’.
