Beverly Hills Magazine: Please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, where did you grow up, any training or education background?

Jacquelin Napal: I studied business in graduate school and was initially planning on going into the entertainment industry. One thing led to another and I found myself knee-deep in the art world instead. I was the director of a gallery for years, where one day, Kat walked in with an idea. And here we are. I’m more than pleased with how things turned out.

Beverly Hills Magazine: When did you discover your passion for art?

Jacquelin Napal: It wasn’t a single hallelujah moment, but more of an interest that I nurtured progressively over the years.

Beverly Hills Magazine: When did you open the gallery?

Jacquelin Napal: We founded the gallery in 2013. Which means we’re celebrating a major milestone this year!

Beverly Hills Magazine: Congratulations!!! How do you select your artists/work to display in the gallery?

Jacquelin Napal: These decisions are paradoxically both easy and complex, and discovery can definitely be a long-term process. Sometimes, we come across artists and we’re aligned – it’s intuitive, it’s that mystical gut feeling everyone talks about. At other times, it’s trickier. The depth of an entire body of work plays a big role. We showcase a wide variety of mediums, at varying price points, so these logistics are also factors.

In all cases, we’ve been committed to staying open-minded from the get-go. We generally avoid boxing ourselves into corners with preset protocols, quotas, and standards on who we “should” show.

Beverley Hills Magazine: What is your favorite kind of artwork?

Jacquelin Napal: Both Kat and I tend to gravitate toward works that exude some form of emotion, regardless of the medium. Our alignment on that has been key to our collaboration flow.

Beverly Hills Magazine: Where do you get your inspiration as an entrepreneur in the art world?

Jacquelin Napal: Absolutely everywhere. I try to go to all the shows and fairs that I possibly can. But beyond the art world itself, we’re lucky to be in a city where there are all sorts of talents working in all sorts of fields, and the best inspiration is multidisciplinary. Our success at the gallery has largely been shaped by the learnings we’ve borrowed from other industries.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What is your gallery signature? What makes your gallery unique?

Jacquelin Napal: Our shows are experiential and immersive and are open to everyone. Attendees tend to bring them up in conversation years later. We’re far removed from that traditional idea of a white cube.

Beverly Hills Magazine: Why do you think art is such a valuable collector’s item?

Jacquelin Napal: Believe it or not, collecting art is an interesting and unconventional way to discover what moves you. People might have a clear-cut understanding of the music, food, sports, and hobbies they enjoy – but they’ll pause at the gallery to evaluate their visual interests, and by extension, personal values. There’s always a fascinating epiphany. The more they collect, the more they unravel.

Beverly Hills Magazine: How are collectors an important part of the art world?

Jacquelin Napal: Collectors help artists and galleries – emerging and established – to thrive, and their support is paramount.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What advice would you give to aspiring artists out there?

Jacquelin Napal: To find their own voice and rhythm without succumbing to the allure of fleeting trends and expectations. Social media can be a fantastic source of inspiration… until it’s not.

Beverly Hills Magazine:  Have you discovered a personal purpose in what you do?

Jacquelin Napal: We’re contributing to an ecosystem that celebrates creation, promotes diversity, and encourages critical thinking. I’m so grateful to take part in that… there’s so much power for good. So yes!

Jacquelin Napal: I do want to clarify that our work extends beyond the gallery. We curate complete art collections for collectors, real estate developers, and hospitality properties. One example is “The One” in Bel Air. In collaboration with Creative Art Partners, we placed a collection of art that includes pieces by Stephen Wilson and Niclas Castello. And we’ve been curating displays at Nobu Eden Roc Hotel and the Nobu Restaurant in Miami since 2018.

Also, I’d like to thank Create & Cultivate for including me and Kat in their “100 List 2023”. There are 99 other women founders, creators, and disruptors on the list and I encourage readers to discover all that they do.
