Teens spend a lot of time in their bedrooms. It’s the one space in the house where they have a bit of creative license and are able to put their own stamp on things, express themselves, and create a world that reflects their own. We know that the sheer amount of inspiration you can take from Pinterest alone can be overwhelming but it’s worth battling through to give your teen the bedroom of their dreams.

If you’re a parent that wants to help their teen turn their bedroom into an oasis in which they can pursue their passions, spend time with their friends and – yes, even occasionally do some homework, then check out our guide for how to style the ultimate teen bedroom.

Create A Hangout Space

Like most predatory animals teens travel everywhere in packs. We’re joking (sort of) but it’s true that most teens bring their friends everywhere with them. If you don’t want hoards of teens taking over your living room or kitchen every afternoon you have to make sure you’ve got a dedicated teen hangout space. What you’ll need to make this happen is as much seating as you can reasonably pack into your teens bedroom. A couch is great but, if we’re being honest, most bedrooms won’t have enough space for a full-sized couch. Beanbags and lounge chairs are a great way to create seating nooks in your teen’s room. A small hanging chair will also not only provide a great seating option but it will earn you much needed cool points in your kid’s eyes. If there’s no space in your teen’s room for spare seating consider pushing their bed against the wall and lining throw pillows up against the wall so that their bed can double as a quasi-couch.

Lofted Beds

There’s a reason that college dorms use lofted and elevated beds. It’s an effective and simple way to create more floor space and make a space feel bigger. The space under a lofted bed can be used for storage, can house a desk or be a hangout zone with a couch or beanbag that will stop them from laying on their bed during the day. Having separate chill and sleep zones can help to delineate between the time you spend working in your bedroom or hanging out with mates and the time you spend sleeping. Studies have shown that this will ultimately improve your sleep hygiene which will help you to wake up feeling rested.

Homework Space

Your teen may not care if there’s space in their room dedicated to their study but as a parent you sure do care about how their grades turn out. So make sure that, if they ever decide to study, they have a conducive space to do it in with a supportive chair, well-lit desk – a comfortable space to sit down and crank out those essays!

Stay Organised With Storage Galore

It’s amazing how people who have been on the planet for a relatively short amount of time can accumulate so much stuff but they do. So when you’re looking for furniture for a teen’s bedroom look for options that include storage. Consider a storage cube that doubles as an ottoman, under bed storage, and deep drawers.

Practically Perfect

Mary Poppins was practically perfect in every way and now your teens bedroom but be perfectly practical in every way! Teens have busy lives managing their school work, social lives and web of co-curricular activities. Help make their lives just a little bit easier by packing their room with accessories that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are practical. You could check out Sleepify for the list of the best alarm clocks on the market. Or, if you want to totally win the teen bedroom design game, you could invest in a tricked out lapdesk! We know that basic models get the job done and that you can’t buy love but, whoever said that clearly never saw a faux-fur lapdesk with storage and a built-in Bluetooth speaker!
