The first Academy Awards were held in 1929 in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Nearly 100 years on, this year’s red carpet looks echoed back to the good old days of Hollywood. Nowhere was this more clearly seen than in the jewelry modeled by the stars, where modern twists on timeless pieces sparkled under the spotlights. (Image Credit: Carlos Esteves/Unsplash)

Show-stopping Necklaces

Big necklaces were a key trend this year. Elaborate sparkles proved diamonds still take center stage as a girl’s best friend. Well cared for diamonds last many lifetimes, and you can be sure that their Hollywood owners will be doing everything they can to keep them sparkling and scratch-free for future generations. Charlize Theron’s daughters are set to inherit a stunning Tiffany & Co. necklace adorned with 165 diamonds and featuring a 21-carat marquise diamond drop, which was the sparkle she brought to the red carpet this year.

Greta Gerwig also sported the diamond necklace trend. Her baubles included a necklace of diamonds, emeralds and platinum from Bvlgari’s High Jewelry Collection. Mindy Kaling, meanwhile, drew attention to her neckline with a Chopard floral fringe necklace studded with diamonds. Other stars giving elaborate diamond necklaces a chance to steal the show were Gal Gadot, Zazie Beetz, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. These diamond pieces echoed back to 1930s glamor when stars like Joan Crawford modeled large, eye-catching pieces featuring cut stones and highly polished gold.

Elegant Earrings

Large sparkling earrings were red carpet favorites in the 1940s. This style saw a reprise again this year at the 92nd Academy Awards. While their 40s predecessors favored large studs worn high on the lobe (a trend mimicked this year by Caitriona Balfe), this year’s nominees modeled a variety of styles from studs to chandeliers.  Scarlett Johansson opted for a necklace-free look. Instead, she drew attention to her neckline with diamond drop earrings in a white gold setting by Forevermark x Anita Ko Pear. Saoirse Ronan, meanwhile, radiated elegance in her Gucci High Jewelry chandelier earrings and butterfly hair clip.

The red carpet has always been about glamour. And this year’s trends echoed back to the stars who paved the way. Modern twists on timeless classics showed that when it comes to jewelry, some fashion trends stand the test of time.
