The Island of Spetses

The affluent island of Spetses is part of Greece’s Attica Islands. This cluster of islands sits off the country’s eastern shoreline near Athens. Covered with lush pine trees and bountiful with ports and beaches, Spetses truly is unique. As expected, much of the community’s economy is reliant upon fishing. However, it is also a favorite destination among the well-heeled. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see luxury superyachts floating in the sea next to humble fishing vessels. This sight also transfers on land as the lives of the wealthy and working-class intertwine creating a convivial neighborhood atmosphere.

With so much of its culture stemming from the blue Mediterranean, it’s not surprising that Spetses hosts a yacht regatta in early summer. The most popular race in Greece and the region, the Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta is a four-day event. With more than 75 boats participating, it’s an event not to be missed!

And in a nod to its naval roots and to commemorate a victorious battle in 1821, the island presents its annual Armata Festival. Filled with exhibitions, performances, re-creations and fun, the week long event is a favorite among locals. One of the most impressive sights is the Turkish boat that is constructed in Old Harbour of Spetses in the weeks leading up to the festival. Indeed, once completed, it serves to be the highlight and climax of the festival!

A Castle Retreat

Located just five minutes from the Old Harbour, this stunning castle belies its age. In fact, while it has an old world charm, it was only built in 1991. Within its 6,674 square feet, it has five bedrooms and 5+ bathrooms.

Perched on a private peninsula above a rocky, craggy shoreline, this dream home offers a stunning and unimpeded view of the sea. Two private docks provide easy access to the water and are the appropriate depth for yachts. In addition, the luxury estate has two private and secluded beaches. Furthermore, the large outdoor pool is surrounded by ample seating and overlooks the Mediterranean.

700 olive trees fill the nearly eight acre parcel. In addition, the vineyard grows a bounty of Merlot grapes, among some other varieties. As such, the wine cellar has a capacity of 1,200 bottles as well as barrels, making this castle perfect for an oenophile interested in their own production.

Life in the Mediterranean promises relaxation and a serene lifestyle. When you’ve decided to head to the blue waters of the region, be sure to check out the castle of Cavo Sereno.
